I am MaryKate and this is my amazing Bernese Mountain Dog, Rylee!
My goal at heartyhealthyhound.com is for you to become more educated about your canine’s health and wellness. This includes the dangers posed by the many toxic and unhealthy substances they encounter and ingest everyday, mostly through what we (their owners) are giving them!
It is within your power to make your canine’s life much healthier and happier. You just need to know what is harming them, and a better alternative. That’s where HHH comes in!
I grew up with my own dog, Jennie, who was one of my best friends. She was a Newfoundland/retriever mix who was always there when I needed a friend or a shoulder to cry on.
However, when she was about 9 years old, she developed cancer in her right shoulder as well as a liver problem, and I had to eventually put her to sleep. Now, 9 years old is a long life for a large dog, but I always wondered if there was more I could have done to keep her healthy or prevent the cancer.
A year and a half ago, I decided to bring another furry, canine friend in to replace my ‘first puppy love’ Jennie. Meet Rylee, my Bernese Mountain Dog who is now 1 ½ years old and a wonderful companion and friend. As soon as I brought her home, I started to research every aspect of her health and wellness.
I was digging for better, healthier lifestyle tips and tricks, sound advice and new research on canine health and wellness. I wanted her to be as healthy as I could possibly help her to be.
What my research found was appalling!
Not only was almost everything she consumed harmful in some way, but there were minimal regulations on everything as well.
This means that they can put pretty much WHATEVER THEY WANT in the food, treats, dental chews, etc that we are feeding our pets everyday.
A few examples include other euthanized pets, roadkill and zoo animals ‘reprocessed’ into meat meal in many dog foods. Grain fillers in almost every food, treat and chew (naturally, canines need almost no grains, yet they consume almost as much as we do!) Toxic flame retardants sprayed on almost every commercially available pet bed, pillow and blanket. Then, there are the treats, toys, accessories, grooming supplies, etc. that have terribly harmful chemicals in them as well.
After learning all of this, it no longer shocks me that over ⅔ of all dogs will develop cancer in their lifetime! That’s not even counting other diseases or ‘normal’ health problems such as allergies, asthma, diabetes, etc. which have also dramatically increased in the last 15-20 years.
Suddenly, keeping Rylee ‘healthy’ took on a whole new meaning and became much harder!
Everywhere I looked it seemed there were ‘hidden’ dangers and secret ingredients. I would find a food that met all of the right guidelines and seemed perfect, only to find later that there were still ‘undefined’ ingredients and fillers that I didn’t know about. Also, the cute toy that she seemed to love was sprayed with some kind of toxic chemical from China!
Navigating her care and wellness started to feel like tiptoeing through a minefield!
If this is starting to concern you, or you are starting to feel overwhelmed, that’s exactly how I felt. This is the reason why I am starting Hearty Healthy Hound.
